Palaniswami Mocks Vijay Over Growing PM Ambitions

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has taken a sharp swipe at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay amid growing efforts within the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to project the actor-turned-politician as a potential future Prime Minister.

Palaniswami used sarcasm to dismiss the idea, saying Vijay could even become the President of the United States. His comments came as TVK leaders and supporters have increasingly spoken about a larger national role for their party chief.

The remarks add another layer to the increasingly competitive political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu, where Vijay's rise has introduced a new force into a political landscape historically dominated by established Dravidian parties.

EPS Uses Trump Remark to Mock Vijay’s PM Push

Speaking about the growing campaign to project Vijay for the Prime Minister's post, Palaniswami responded with an intentionally exaggerated comparison.

He said Vijay could even become the US President and suggested that replacing Donald Trump was also possible. The former Tamil Nadu chief minister's statement was clearly framed as sarcasm, aimed at questioning the seriousness of the national ambitions being discussed by Vijay's supporters.

Palaniswami's argument was essentially that political aspirations are unrestricted, but winning and governing require considerably more than publicity and ambitious claims.

The comment also allowed the AIADMK leader to attack what he portrayed as TVK's emphasis on image-building rather than administrative performance.

TVK Leaders Step Up ‘Vijay for PM’ Campaign

The immediate trigger for the political exchange is the increasing visibility of the “Vijay for PM” campaign.

TVK leaders Aadhav Arjuna and Sarathkumar have openly backed the idea of Vijay eventually taking on a national leadership role. Posters supporting Vijay as a potential Prime Minister have also surfaced in parts of Tamil Nadu, including Tuticorin.

For TVK, such messaging represents an attempt to establish Vijay as more than a state-level political figure.

However, projecting a chief minister for the Prime Minister's post before demonstrating sustained electoral strength creates an obvious target for opponents. Palaniswami's response reflects precisely that political strategy: turn the ambition itself into an object of ridicule.

Palaniswami Questions Vijay’s Political Credibility

The AIADMK leader also criticised the style in which the Vijay government communicates its activities.

Palaniswami accused the state administration of relying heavily on social-media content and “reels”, arguing that such publicity cannot substitute for governance.

His criticism is significant because Vijay entered politics with an enormous existing public profile from cinema.

The actor's popularity gives TVK an immediate level of visibility that most new political parties would take years to build. But that same celebrity background provides established parties with an opening to question whether popularity translates into administrative experience and political organisation.

The AIADMK's criticism therefore focuses on a central challenge facing Vijay: converting personal popularity into a durable political structure.

Vijay’s Film Stardom Shapes His Political Rise

Vijay's transition from cinema to politics has made him one of the most closely watched new political figures in Tamil Nadu.

Unlike conventional politicians who spend years building party networks before seeking power, Vijay entered politics with an established fan base and extensive public recognition.

That gives TVK a major advantage in terms of visibility and mobilisation.

At the same time, political analysts have questioned whether his popularity can translate into votes across different regions, communities and political constituencies. Earlier analysis of the Tamil Nadu political landscape described Vijay as a potentially disruptive force, while noting the challenges facing a new party attempting to break into an established political system.

The difference between celebrity recognition and electoral organisation is therefore likely to remain one of the biggest questions surrounding TVK.

Why the PM Debate Matters in Tamil Nadu Politics

The discussion about Vijay becoming Prime Minister may appear premature, but it has political significance even at the state level.

Tamil Nadu politics has historically produced leaders whose influence extended beyond the state. The state's major parties have frequently played important roles in national coalition politics.

By talking about Vijay as a potential Prime Minister, TVK supporters are attempting to frame the party as a movement with ambitions beyond Fort St George.

That could help attract voters who want a political alternative to established parties.

But it could also strengthen attacks from rivals who argue that Vijay should first demonstrate that he can successfully manage Tamil Nadu before seeking a national role.

AIADMK Seeks to Challenge TVK’s Growing Space

For Palaniswami and the AIADMK, Vijay's emergence represents another challenge in an already competitive political environment.

The AIADMK has traditionally occupied a major space in Tamil Nadu's opposition politics. A strong TVK could potentially compete for voters who are dissatisfied with established parties or attracted by Vijay's image.

That makes criticism of TVK strategically important for AIADMK.

Rather than treating Vijay's national ambitions as a serious possibility, Palaniswami's sarcastic response attempts to reduce their political credibility. By comparing the PM ambition with becoming the US President, he seeks to portray the claim as unrealistic.

Vijay Faces Test Beyond Popularity and Publicity

The political battle ultimately comes down to whether Vijay can convert his enormous public recognition into electoral strength and effective governance.

Being a successful film star and becoming a successful political leader require very different skills. A political organisation needs local-level workers, candidates, constituency networks, policy positions and sustained public engagement.

It must also demonstrate that its leadership can handle difficult administrative decisions rather than simply generate public enthusiasm.

For Vijay, his position as chief minister gives him an opportunity to build that record.

For his opponents, however, his performance in government will become the benchmark against which his larger ambitions are judged.

Political Jibe Signals Bigger Battle Ahead

Palaniswami's “US President” remark is therefore more than a one-line political joke.

It reflects a growing contest over how Tamil Nadu's newest major political entrant should be perceived.

TVK supporters are attempting to present Vijay as a leader capable of moving from Tamil Nadu politics to the national stage. AIADMK, meanwhile, is challenging that narrative by questioning his experience, governance and political credibility.

As Vijay's national ambitions become more visible, such attacks are likely to intensify.

For now, the Prime Minister debate remains largely a political projection rather than an immediate electoral possibility. But Palaniswami's latest jibe shows that established parties are already taking the rhetoric seriously enough to fight back.

The larger question is whether Vijay's popularity can evolve into a political force strong enough to influence Tamil Nadu—and eventually, if his supporters have their way, national politics.
