NEW DELHI, August 18, 2026: A fresh political confrontation erupted in Delhi on Tuesday after former minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Satyendar Jain was arrested in connection with an alleged corruption case linked to the Delhi Jal Board. AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal strongly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the arrest was politically motivated and accusing the ruling party of pursuing a “dictatorship.”
The arrest has intensified the long-running political battle between the AAP and the BJP over corruption allegations, investigative agencies and the treatment of opposition leaders.
Why was Satyendar Jain arrested?
Jain was arrested by the Delhi government's Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) in a case concerning alleged irregularities in the tendering process for projects involving the Delhi Jal Board.
According to the details reported by the Times of India, the investigation relates to the augmentation and upgradation of sewage treatment plants under the Delhi Jal Board. Authorities allege that the tendering process involved manipulation of conditions and other irregularities.
Five other people were also arrested in the case, taking the total number of arrests to six. Those arrested include former Delhi Jal Board CEO Udit Prakash Rai, former contractual consultant Ankit Srivastava and three private individuals.
The case originated from an FIR registered on May 11, 2024, following a complaint by the Directorate of Vigilance of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Investigators have invoked provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code, including allegations relating to bribery, criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy.
Kejriwal calls arrest political targeting
Reacting to Jain's arrest, Kejriwal alleged that the former minister had again been targeted at the BJP's behest.
Kejriwal argued that Jain had already faced a difficult period following an earlier case and claimed that the previous allegations were fabricated. He said the latest case would also ultimately be proven false.
The AAP leader questioned the consequences for people who spend time in jail before allegations against them are resolved.
His criticism went beyond Jain's individual case. Kejriwal accused the BJP of routinely using criminal cases to intimidate political opponents and asked how people would be compensated for the time and mental distress they allegedly suffer during imprisonment.
“How long will BJP’s dictatorship continue?”
Kejriwal used particularly strong language while attacking the BJP.
He accused the party of putting people behind bars through what he described as false cases and questioned how long such alleged political tactics could continue.
He further claimed that the arrest represented a point at which the BJP had gone too far, declaring that the “end” of the Modi government was certain.
Kejriwal also said that the AAP and its supporters stood firmly behind Jain.
These statements reflect the AAP's broader political narrative that central and state investigative mechanisms are being used to pressure opposition leaders. However, Kejriwal's allegations are political claims and do not by themselves establish that the corruption case is fabricated or politically motivated.
What investigators allege in the Delhi Jal Board case
The case focuses on alleged wrongdoing in the award and management of contracts connected with sewage treatment plant projects.
Investigators are examining allegations of large-scale irregularities, manipulation of tender conditions and criminal conspiracy in the tendering process.
The inclusion of former officials and private individuals in the arrests indicates that investigators are examining the case beyond the role of a single political figure.
The allegations remain subject to the legal process. An arrest is not, by itself, a finding of guilt, and the allegations against Jain and the other accused will have to be tested through the appropriate judicial proceedings.
AAP sees a wider political pattern
For the AAP, Jain's arrest is particularly significant because he is a senior figure from the party who has previously faced criminal investigation.
Kejriwal's response therefore seeks to place the latest development within a broader political narrative: that opposition leaders are being subjected to investigations and arrests while the BJP is in power.
This argument has featured repeatedly in AAP's criticism of the central government and BJP.
The BJP, meanwhile, has consistently rejected allegations that corruption investigations against opposition politicians are politically motivated and has maintained that investigative agencies should pursue allegations of wrongdoing.
The latest arrest is therefore likely to become another flashpoint in the larger political dispute over the independence and use of investigative institutions.
Why the arrest matters for Delhi politics
The Delhi Jal Board has long been an important component of Delhi's political and administrative landscape because it oversees water supply and sewage-related infrastructure in the national capital.
Any allegations involving major public contracts can therefore carry political consequences, particularly when senior former ministers and government officials are among those being investigated.
For the AAP, the immediate challenge is to defend one of its prominent leaders while ensuring that the corruption allegations do not become a broader political liability.
For the BJP, the investigation provides an opportunity to argue that allegations of corruption should be pursued regardless of the political identity of those involved.
Kejriwal escalates his political attack
Kejriwal's response shows that the AAP intends to fight the arrest politically as well as legally.
By describing the BJP's actions as “dictatorship,” he has shifted the focus from the specific allegations surrounding the Delhi Jal Board contracts to a much larger question about democracy, political opposition and the use of investigative powers.
The coming stages of the case will therefore be closely watched not only for evidence relating to the alleged tender irregularities but also for the political battle that is developing around Jain's arrest.
For now, the central dispute remains sharply divided: investigators allege corruption and manipulation in public tenders, while Kejriwal and the AAP allege political targeting and false charges. The courts and the ongoing investigation will determine how the allegations ultimately stand.
