Punjab BJP Issues Notices to 3 Leaders Over Party Remarks

NEW DELHI: The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against three of its leaders for publicly commenting on the party’s internal affairs and organisational issues.

The party’s disciplinary committee has issued show-cause notices to former Sangrur district presidents Randeep Singh Deol, Maninder Singh Kapial and Jatinder Kalra, asking them to explain their conduct.

According to the notices, the leaders’ public statements were viewed as potentially damaging to the BJP’s reputation, credibility and organisational image. The party has directed the three leaders to submit written explanations within seven days of receiving the notices.

The committee has also sought details about their participation in a press conference, the statements made during the event and the purpose behind holding it. The three leaders had addressed a press conference in Sangrur on August 25, bringing internal organisational concerns into the public domain.

Action follows internal dissent

The disciplinary move comes amid signs of discontent within the Punjab BJP following a recent organisational reshuffle. Some sections of the party have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction, alleging that sections of the old cadre were being sidelined by the state leadership.

The latest action highlights the leadership’s effort to contain public disagreements and reinforce organisational discipline as the party prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

The timing is also significant because BJP national organisational leadership is closely reviewing the party’s functioning in Punjab. BJP state in-charge BL Santosh has begun a two-day visit to the state to assess organisational functioning, improve coordination and strengthen grassroots preparations ahead of the polls.

Focus on organisational unity

The notices appear to underline the party leadership’s position that internal disagreements should be addressed through organisational channels rather than public platforms.

For the BJP, maintaining unity will be particularly important as it seeks to expand its independent political footprint in Punjab ahead of the 2027 elections. The party has recently signalled its intention to contest the state's 117 Assembly seats on its own, increasing the importance of a cohesive state organisation.

The three leaders’ responses to the show-cause notices could now determine whether the matter ends with an explanation or leads to further disciplinary action.

For the moment, the episode reflects the growing pressure on the Punjab BJP to balance internal debate with the need for organisational discipline as election preparations accelerate.
