India-Uzbekistan Ties Rise, NASA Roman Telescope Launches

From Diplomacy to Space: Key News Developments Today

NEW DELHI: India and Uzbekistan upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on Sunday, while NASA successfully launched its Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope in a major mission to study some of the universe's biggest mysteries.

The developments were among the major stories making headlines as the day saw significant movement in diplomacy, science and regional affairs.

India and Uzbekistan Deepen Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev agreed to elevate India-Uzbekistan relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Modi's visit to Uzbekistan.

The two sides also set an ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade to $5 billion by 2030. The agreement is aimed at expanding economic cooperation while strengthening wider strategic engagement between the two countries.

The discussions covered areas including trade, investment, energy and connectivity, reflecting India's broader efforts to deepen ties with Central Asian nations.

NASA Launches Roman Telescope to Study Dark Universe

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope was successfully launched from Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket on August 30.

The observatory is designed to investigate dark matter and dark energy, two major components of the universe that remain poorly understood. It will also search for distant planets and study the large-scale structure and expansion of the universe.

Roman is expected to complement the work of the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. Its wide field of view will allow scientists to survey enormous areas of the sky much faster than earlier observatories.

The telescope is expected to operate around the second Lagrange point, roughly 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, where it will conduct its long-term observations.

Roman Mission Could Transform Exoplanet Research

Alongside its cosmology programme, Roman will contribute to the search for planets beyond the solar system. Its advanced instruments include a coronagraph designed to block the glare of stars and help scientists study exoplanets more directly.

Scientists expect the mission to identify thousands of new worlds and provide a vast amount of data on galaxies and cosmic evolution.

Major Regional and National Developments

Other significant developments also featured in the day's news. In Uttar Pradesh, authorities recovered seven bodies from the Gandak River following severe flooding in neighbouring Nepal, highlighting the wider regional impact of the disaster.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh identified 67 vulnerable glacial lakes and is working on early-warning systems to reduce risks associated with glacial lake outburst floods.

The developments underline the wide range of issues dominating the day's news, from India's expanding international partnerships to major advances in space science and disaster preparedness.
