Amstelveen: The Indian men's hockey team begins its campaign at the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 against Wales on Saturday, with captain Harmanpreet Singh and his side carrying the hopes of ending a 51-year wait for another World Cup title. The Pool D encounter is scheduled at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, on India's 80th Independence Day.
India's only men's Hockey World Cup triumph came in 1975, when Ajit Pal Singh led the team to the title in Kuala Lumpur. Since then, India have been unable to return to the top of the podium. Harmanpreet, who is captaining India at his second World Cup, now has an opportunity to lead a new generation in an attempt to revive the country's historic hockey legacy.
India start as favourites
India enter the opening match as the higher-ranked and more fancied side, but coach Craig Fulton and his players are aware that a World Cup opener can bring its own pressure.
The Indian team has shown encouraging form in the build-up to the tournament. In the final phase of the FIH Pro League, India recorded notable victories over reigning world champions Germany and Olympic champions the Netherlands. They also defeated Pakistan twice and overcame England in a shootout.
Those results have increased expectations around the team, but the players have repeatedly stressed that past performances will have little value once the World Cup begins.
Harmanpreet carries key responsibility
Harmanpreet Singh remains one of India's most important players because of his leadership, defensive ability and penalty-corner expertise.
The captain has said the team's long medal drought should be viewed as a responsibility rather than pressure. India finished sixth at the 2018 World Cup and ninth when they hosted the tournament in 2023, results that have added urgency to the current campaign.
The skipper will be expected to play a major role at both ends of the pitch, particularly when India receive penalty-corner opportunities.
Veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh is also approaching the tournament with a strong sense of purpose. He has indicated that this could be his final World Cup and wants to help India challenge for the title.
Wales cannot be taken lightly
Although India are the favourites, Wales will be determined to make their opening match difficult.
Wales have been placed in the same Pool D as India, England and Pakistan, creating one of the most intriguing groups in the tournament. Every result could prove important because only the top two teams from the opening pool progress to the next phase.
India therefore cannot afford a slow start. A convincing victory against Wales would provide three important points as well as valuable momentum before two high-profile pool matches against England and Pakistan.
A demanding Pool D
India's schedule becomes considerably tougher after the Wales match.
The team will face England on August 17 before meeting arch-rivals Pakistan on August 19. With three matches packed into a short period, squad management and recovery will be crucial.
The revised World Cup format makes every pool match even more significant. The 2026 edition does away with the traditional quarterfinal stage. The top two teams from each first-stage pool advance to a second group phase, from which the semifinalists emerge.
India’s World Cup challenge
The tournament is being jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 15 to 30, with matches played at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen and the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre.
For India, however, the objective extends beyond simply reaching the knockout rounds.
The men's team has won Olympic medals in recent years, including bronze at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, but the World Cup has remained an elusive target. The current squad therefore sees the 2026 tournament as an opportunity to convert its recent international progress into a major title.
