Congress-TVK Rift Deepens Over Rahul or Vijay PM Debate

MLA seat shift fuels fresh tensions between allies

NEW DELHI: Speculation over growing differences between the Congress and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has intensified after Congress MLA Tharahai Cuthbert was shifted to the front row of the Opposition benches in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The seemingly routine seating change has triggered a wider political debate over the future of the Congress-TVK relationship and, more significantly, the question of who could lead a broader national political alternative — Congress leader Rahul Gandhi or TVK chief Vijay.

According to a report by The Times of India, the MLA's relocation has become a fresh point of discussion amid signs of political friction between the two parties.

The development is significant because Congress and TVK have only recently emerged as partners in Tamil Nadu's new political arrangement. Their relationship had appeared strategically beneficial to both sides, but competing ambitions and differences over political positioning could test the alliance.

Why Tharahai Cuthbert's seat matters

In legislative assemblies, seating arrangements can carry political significance even though they are formally administrative decisions.

Cuthbert's movement to the front row of the Opposition benches has therefore attracted attention because Congress is part of the political arrangement supporting the TVK government. The shift has been interpreted by some political observers as a possible indication of dissatisfaction or changing equations between the alliance partners.

There is, however, an important distinction between political speculation and an officially confirmed breakdown.

The seat change by itself does not establish that Congress and TVK have decided to end their cooperation. Instead, it has become a visible symbol around which existing questions about the relationship are now being discussed.

Rahul Gandhi or Vijay: Why the PM debate matters

The larger controversy goes beyond Tamil Nadu politics.

Vijay's rapid political rise has generated questions about whether the actor-turned-politician could eventually seek a role on the national stage. His TVK's strong performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu election dramatically increased his political influence.

At the same time, Rahul Gandhi remains the principal national face of the Congress and a major figure in the Opposition camp.

That creates a potentially complicated political equation.

If Congress wants a national Opposition coalition centred around Rahul Gandhi, it could eventually find itself negotiating with a regional leader whose political ambitions extend beyond Tamil Nadu.

For TVK, meanwhile, supporting a national leadership structure dominated by Congress could potentially limit Vijay's ability to build an independent national identity.

This is why the question of “Rahul or Vijay?” has become more than a personality contest. It reflects a deeper question about who could define the Opposition's political narrative in the years ahead.

TVK's rise changed Tamil Nadu politics

Vijay's TVK emerged as a major force in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, fundamentally altering the state's traditional political equation.

The party won 108 seats, falling short of the 118 needed for a simple majority in the 234-member Assembly. Congress won five seats, making its support particularly important in the formation and stability of the new government.

That arithmetic gave Congress significantly greater leverage than its relatively small seat tally might suggest.

The result also gave Vijay an opportunity to move from being a prominent film personality and political newcomer to the head of a state government.

Congress also gained from the new arrangement

The Congress-TVK relationship has not been one-sided.

Congress, despite winning only five Assembly seats, secured important political benefits after the election. Two Congress leaders were inducted into Vijay's government, ending the party's long absence from the Tamil Nadu cabinet.

The arrangement also included parliamentary benefits. TVK later agreed to give Congress its first Rajya Sabha opportunity, strengthening the national party's position.

This explains why both sides have had strong incentives to maintain cooperation.

For TVK, Congress provides political experience and a bridge to national politics. For Congress, an alliance with Vijay offers access to a powerful new political force in Tamil Nadu.

Why tensions could still emerge

Despite these mutual benefits, alliances involving two ambitious political organisations can become complicated.

Congress has a national structure, a long-established leadership hierarchy and an existing Opposition strategy. TVK, by contrast, is a relatively new party built around Vijay's personal popularity and a distinct political identity.

The two parties could therefore have different priorities.

Congress may seek to strengthen Rahul Gandhi's national leadership and expand its organisational footprint. TVK may want Vijay to remain politically independent and establish himself as a leader capable of shaping national politics without being absorbed into an existing alliance structure.

The disagreement could become sharper if national elections or a broader Opposition coalition brings the question of leadership to the forefront.

Rahul Gandhi had already reached out to Vijay

The relationship between Rahul Gandhi and Vijay has not always appeared confrontational.

After TVK's strong election performance, Rahul Gandhi congratulated Vijay and described the result as reflecting the growing voice of India's youth. Earlier reports also indicated that Gandhi had spoken to Vijay after the election results.

The outreach suggested that Congress recognised Vijay's growing political importance rather than treating TVK simply as another regional party.

That makes the current speculation particularly noteworthy.

A relationship that began with political outreach and cooperation could eventually face questions over relative influence and leadership if both parties seek a larger role in national politics.

Vijay's national ambitions remain the key question

For now, there is no confirmed decision that Vijay is seeking the prime minister's post.

The PM debate is largely part of the political speculation surrounding his rapid rise.

His immediate political responsibility remains the Tamil Nadu government, where he must demonstrate that TVK can translate its electoral success into effective administration.

Running a state government is considerably different from building a political movement around personal popularity. Vijay's ability to manage coalition partners, maintain legislative support and deliver on governance promises will determine how durable his political influence becomes.

If TVK succeeds in Tamil Nadu, however, pressure for Vijay to play a larger national role could naturally increase.

What the Congress-TVK dispute could mean

If the reported tensions remain limited to internal disagreements, the alliance could continue because both parties have substantial political reasons to cooperate.

But if disagreements deepen over leadership, policy or the future direction of the alliance, the consequences could extend beyond the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Congress needs strong regional partners to expand its electoral reach. TVK needs alliances that do not undermine Vijay's independent political identity.

That creates a delicate balancing act.

The current controversy surrounding Cuthbert's seat change may therefore be less important for the actual seating arrangement than for what it reveals about perceptions of the alliance.

A test for a new political partnership

The Congress-TVK relationship is still relatively young. Its early phase was shaped by electoral arithmetic, mutual political advantage and Vijay's emergence as a major force.

The next phase could be much more difficult.

Congress will have to decide how far it is willing to accommodate Vijay's expanding influence, while TVK will have to determine whether cooperation with an established national party strengthens or constrains its long-term ambitions.

For now, the reported seat shift has intensified speculation rather than confirmed a political split.

But the emerging Rahul Gandhi versus Vijay debate highlights a much bigger question: whether the Congress-TVK partnership can remain stable if both sides eventually seek to shape the future of Opposition politics at the national level.
