BJP minister says court directives must be followed by all
KOLKATA: West Bengal minister Agnimitra Paul has said that violations of a Calcutta High Court order will not be tolerated, regardless of who is involved. Her remarks came after Kolkata Police registered an FIR against former chief minister Mamata Banerjee over an alleged breach of court directions during a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) programme in Kolkata.
Paul defended the registration of the FIR and stressed that court orders must be respected by everyone. She alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress government had repeatedly shown disregard for the High Court and its judges.
FIR Filed Over Alleged Violation of Court Directions
The FIR was registered after an incident linked to the TMCP's foundation day programme. Police alleged that conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court concerning traffic movement and crowd management were not followed during the event.
According to reports, barricades intended to regulate the gathering were breached, leading to disruption around the programme. The case has added another layer to the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Trinamool Congress.
Paul Says No One Is Above Court Orders
Paul said the identity or political position of the person involved should not determine how a court order is enforced.
The minister argued that the High Court had specifically directed that traffic movement should not be stopped because of the TMCP rally. She alleged that supporters of Banerjee nevertheless disrupted traffic, describing the development as a disregard for the court's instructions.
Paul said such conduct could not be allowed to continue and maintained that the FIR was justified.
Political Clash Intensifies Ahead of Bengal Politics
The FIR has intensified the political confrontation between the BJP-led state government and the Trinamool Congress. Banerjee and her party have frequently criticised actions taken by the new state administration, while BJP leaders have continued to target the former chief minister over the policies and conduct of the previous government.
Paul also alleged that judges had faced repeated criticism during the earlier Trinamool government, arguing that such practices should not be repeated.
The allegations made by Paul are political claims, while the reported FIR concerns the alleged violation of court directions during the TMCP event. The legal process will determine the allegations against those named or implicated in the case.
Mamata Banerjee Faces Fresh Legal Challenge
The FIR adds to the legal and political challenges facing Banerjee as the dispute over the TMCP programme moves forward.
For the BJP, the issue has become an opportunity to stress the importance of compliance with judicial orders. For the Trinamool Congress, the case is likely to become another point of political confrontation with the state government.
The development comes amid heightened political activity in West Bengal, with both sides increasingly using legal, administrative and political issues to challenge each other.
